Active Whakatāne (College Road Safer Travel Route)
Our Active Whakatāne Strategy aims to make walking, cycling, and scootering around our district safer and easier through education and purpose-built infrastructure.
As part of this strategy, we’re creating Safer Travel Routes that encourage lower traffic speeds, encourage more walking and cycling and make our neighbourhoods safer for everyone.
We want your feedback on a proposed Safer Travel Route in the College Road neighbourhood.
College Road Safer Travel Route
College Road - Shared user path extension area
Through this proposed Safer Travel Route, we’re hoping to make it easier and safer for tamariki to get to school and for pedestrians to reach destinations like the Edgecumbe Library, College Road shops, the walk along the stopbank and playgrounds.
Key features of the proposed Safer Travel Route include:
Extension of the shared use pathway outside Riverslea Mall extended past Edgecumbe Primary School and Edgecumbe College.
Four new raised crossings. One at the intersection of Rata Avenue and College Road and the other three either side of Edgecumbe Primary and the College and between the two schools.

A key part of our Active Whakatāne Strategy is to make our streets safer places for our most vulnerable road users. Measures such as bringing down speeds and reducing “rat-running” on local roads make it safer and more enjoyable for people to incorporate walking and cycling into their daily lives.
