Draft Speed Management Plan - Marae Feedback Form

As part of a nationwide programme led by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, councils across the country are in the process of developing new Speed Management Plans that will guide how Councils deliver safety improvements across our Rohi. Implementing safety improvements at Marae is a key area of developing this plan, recognising the importance of Marae as gathering places and the hub for many communities.

As part of this process, we are reaching out to each Marae in the district to understand what speed limits, speed infrastructure, and other safety improvements they would like to see around their Marae. Some of you may already have been part of a similar process for our Rural Kura and Schools last year, those changes will be implemented later this year and the details of these are included with the attached Speed Management Plan.

When will this happen?

We expect to develop a Draft Speed Management Plan by mid-June 2023 for consultation with the public commencing 1 July 2023. Feedback from Marae can be incorporated into the Speed Mangaement Plan until 15 August but further changes can be incorporated at a later date if necessary. The plan will be implemented over the 10-years starting from early 2024 and will be periodically reviewed to capture input from the community and reflect updated guidance.

What we'd like to understand

We would like to understand from the Marae Committee or Chairman:

  • What permanent speed limit would be most appropriate outside of your Marae?
  • If the option was available, would you like to be able to adjust the speed limit at your Marae during tangi or other events? If so what speed would be appropriate during these events?

Alongside speed limit changes, is there any infrastructure that may need to be installed to encourage motorists to stick to the speed limit or to keep students safe? You could consider:

  1. speed humps
  2. additional crossing points
  3. improved walking or cycling infrastructure.

Are there any other road safety concerns in your rohi that you would like to raise with us?

We are happy if you would like to call us or provide your feedback by email or by the online survey form. If desirable, we are also happy to discuss this in person at a Marae meeting or with Marae members as you see fit.

Ngā mihi,

The Whakatāne District Council Transport Team.
