Rural School Speed Review

Thank you for your interest, consultation closed on Friday, 11 November 2022.

Changes are coming to speed limits outside schools as part of our Local Road Speed Review.

As part of a nationwide programme led by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, councils across the country are in the process of developing new Speed Management Plans that will guide changes to speed limits across high-risk roads.

This is part of an effort to meet a national target to reduce deaths and severe injuries on our roads by 40 percent over the next 10 years.

Under new laws set by Government, we must reduce speeds around schools – but you can tell us what area you think the speed limit should apply to or what road calming measures you may like to see, such as speedbumps, crossings, signage etc.

Over the next 10 years, we'll be looking at speed changes near schools and kura, marae, cemeteries and urupa, high-risk rural roads, places where there is community demand for change and areas where there are high numbers of pedestrians and cyclists.

We’re starting with speeds outside the following rural schools:

Schools on State Highways will go through this process with Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.
